Over a duration of eight months, I tallied the total sum of brewed coffee purchases made with a credit card. While my heart goes out to local businesses, most ma-and-pop shops are cash-only or I can't verify on the receipt that I actually purchased a cup of joe and not something else. I separated each receipt into it's corresponding month and picked the top five venues based on frequency of purchase. When you look at this visualization, you'll see there was a decline in consumption during the month of July and January. In July, I did a caffeine cleanse and in January my work took me to a neighborhood where most cafes accept only cash.
We often make fun of smokers for how much money they spend on their addiction. But do we ever poke and laugh at those of us who spend the equivalent amount of money on another type of addiction? Yes, us coffee fanatics. At one point in an old apartment I even had a drip coffee machine in my bedroom. Often times, I rather drink coffee instead of wine at a nice restaurant. And most mornings, it's the only thing I want for breakfast. So how much was my addiction costing...my wallet?
